I have been thinking about teaching English in South Korea. I have a lot of research to do before I set my heart on it, but wondered if I could get any info. on Korean life;
what is the cost of living compared to the pay?
Are most Hagwons as bad as I've read?
Are the cities too hectic?
Is it a good mix of western and eastern life?
Korean life is what you make of it. If you are open to a different culture, food, and customs you will have a great time in Korea. I've been teaching in Busan for 6 years and have had a wonderful time here. I've known people that hated it and others that loved it. The cost of living is pretty cheap. The Korean won is roughly the same as the dollar, so the price of goods are comparable to the US or Canda. However, with a 5% income tax and no sales tax, you get more for your money. An average meal will be $3.50 to $8.00 depending on where you go. Sometimes a little bit more.. If you want to save money, it's easy to put away at least half of your pay every month.
Not all hagwans are bad. I've had a few really good jobs hare and a couple of bad ones. Just remember, nobody talks about how great their job is, it's only the ones that have problems that complain. I've also seen a few westerners that had really bad attitudes and would never be happy in any situation. "Don't believe everything you read!" Sometime the cities can be hectic, especially if you drive. I like the cities because they never die down. Bars and restaurants stay open until dawn and there is no legal closing time. There is always something to do! Korea is a very westernized country yet maintains some of its Korean tradition. A great example is in Seoul where you can visit an acient palace with the backdrop of office buildings in the background. Hope this helps!
